Carlos Alves

BIOGRAPHY

Carlos Alves was born in Brazil in 1964.

Early on during his childhood Alves discovered he possessed a prolific talent for anything that involved his hands and imagination.

At age 11, in his hometown of Monte Castelo, he began earning a living by weaving colored weft threads for tapestries and rugs.

Throughout his adolescence and early adulthood, Alves developed his first artistic rendering: ceramic sculptures. About 20 works of art are still preserved in his country.

In the United States -where Alves decided to establish his residency- he progressed to complex topiaries. They were known for having extraordinary combinations of rare and unusual materials all blended in perfect balance.

In 1999, he began painting. What started as a hobby -to cover the walls of his condo and other properties- became another professional and formal activity.

The first opportunity to land on the art scene arrived during the summer of 2006. A personal friend, who knew beforehand of Alves’ talent, invited him to participate in a singular collective at Leiter Gallery.

Located in the upper east side of Miami, Leiter Gallery was preparing an unprecedented visual art exhibit: “The Art of Living”. An adjacent house was transformed into a showroom with a collection of timeless Asian furniture, sculptures and paintings from artists such as L. Oriano Galloni, John LaHuis, Sinuhe Vega, Rafael Arango, David Stuart, Anna Carballosa and others.

Carlos Alves’ work not only gained notoriety it also earned profits. He was invited again to participate in the exhibits “Unveiling of the Sculpture Garden” and “Satisfaction”.

in June 2007, Carlos participated in the United and Proud exhibition at the Gallery Six Broward County Main Library showcasing the original works of over 50 artists. His artwork "Seasons" was recognized with the Best Mixed Media award by judges Steven Glassman and Tin Ly of the Broward County Cultural Division.

Carlos’s first Solo Exhibition took place on December 1st 2007 in Fort Lauderdale at the Avenue Lofts Gallery, displaying 20 of his artworks.

Carlos participates in the 2007 Art Basel week Special Event Dolce IV: Look and Life at the Castello on Sunset Isle II – Miami Beach, where artists such as Wilhelm Moser, Don Shearer, Ronnie Cultrone works were exhibited.

The type of work this artist produces is a mixture of what his creative mind and emotional heart usually seek to reveal.

At first, the work seems like abstract expressionism for some people but when observed from the context in which they were conceived there are conceptual elements involved in every painting he creates. A lot of intricate details completed with his finished and polished perfectionism.

Chaos, War in Iraq, Fear, Reproduction, and Friendship but above all is Consciousness the theme that is recurrent in Carlos Alves’ work. It is like if some sort of medium possesses his creativity to come up with this outstanding type of material.

Without any doubt Alves is to be placed in the category of an experimental innovator. He plays with perception and symbolism through complex forms, shapes and textures.

It is indeed an intended passionate journey done with symbolic language, the one he expresses when he paints.
